Aug 13: Los Alamos County Community & Housing Development

Greetings Rotarians and Friends,

This year, our nation proudly celebrates a historic milestone. American women athletes brought home a record 67 medals, composing more than half of the total medals won by the United States. The United States and China both claimed 40 gold medals, with American women contributing 26 of those victories. These outstanding achievements highlight the strength, determination, and talent of women athletes who have risen to the challenge and made their mark on the world stage.

This year also marks the first Olympic Games to achieve gender parity, a significant step forward in the pursuit of equality and representation in sports. This achievement resonates deeply with Rotary’s mission, which is dedicated to advancing peace and understanding through service and fostering equality and empowerment in communities worldwide.

Just as the women of the Olympics have broken barriers and reached new heights, we, too, strive to empower individuals and promote positive change. Let us celebrate these inspiring athletes and recommit ourselves to Rotary’s mission of creating a more inclusive and equitable world for all.

Yours in Rotary,

James Wernicke, Service Chair

Aug 6: Ukraine Children, Hiroshima Bombing Anniversary

Greetings Rotarians and Friends,

Yesterday, my family and I had the profound experience of visiting the Hiroshima Peace Memorial. Standing in the shadow of history, we were reminded of the devastating impact of the atomic bombing and the resilience of the human spirit in the face of unimaginable adversity. As we walked through the exhibits, we were struck by the stories of those who suffered and survived, and by the ongoing commitment to peace and reconciliation that the memorial embodies.

As members of the Los Alamos Rotary Club, we carry a unique responsibility in the pursuit of peace. August 6 marks the anniversary of the Hiroshima bombing, a moment in history that forever changed our world. It is a poignant reminder of our duty to advocate for understanding and peace-building in all corners of the globe and take meaningful action to foster dialogue, empathy, and cooperation ensuring that the lessons of the past guide us towards a better tomorrow.

Jul 30: Club Assembly and Tacos

Greetings Rotarians and Friends,

There will be a club assembly at this week’s meeting, July 30, where we will discuss our recent projects, review our goals for the upcoming year, and brainstorm new initiatives to further our mission of service above self. Your participation and input are crucial as we work together to make a positive impact in our community. We look forward to seeing you there!

🌮 Did I mention there will be tacos?  And enchiladas? Mexican food doesn’t grow on trees, ya know, so please bring a few bucks to chip in for the meal. And if you want more Taco Tuesdays, make a suggestion at the meeting! 🌮

The Strive to Thrive resilience ropes course passed inspection and is ready to go for the upcoming semester! All we need to do now is train some instructors, and do you know how we do that? With your support! Contact Alison Pannell for more info.

RYLA 2024 wrapped up this week. Highlights included emotional intelligence workshops by Dr. Carol Flinchbaugh, inspirational talks by trailblazers like Bequi and Amity Livingston, and practical financial literacy sessions by Guadalupe Credit Union. Campers engaged in challenging high ropes courses, team-building exercises, and creative competitions like the RYLA Olympics. Daily routines featured structured meals and social activities, fostering community and discipline. The camp concluded with recognition for outstanding contributions, but its impact on our future leaders will last a lifetime.

Jul 15: Foreign Exchange Abroad

Greetings Rotarians and Friends,

RI President Stephanie Urchick recently wrote on the essence of our organization—the sense of belonging and purpose that Rotary offers. Stephanie urges us to make Rotary “simply irresistible” by enhancing our club experience, engaging every member, and fostering an environment where everyone feels valued and essential. The following actions are inspired by Stephanie’s advice:

  1. Let’s talk openly about what we want from our Rotary experience and collaborate to create a welcoming, engaging environment for all. Ensuring our member satisfaction surveys are relevant to all members can provide valuable insights into how we can improve and grow together.
  2. Invite friends and acquaintances from diverse backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives to join us. By sharing our passion for community and service, we can attract individuals who bring fresh ideas and enthusiasm to our club.
  3. Take advantage of the tools and resources available through Rotary International. These can help us strengthen our service projects, offer professional development opportunities, and provide mentorship that enriches our Rotary journey.
  4. Highlight our impactful projects, such as the ongoing fight to end polio, to engage potential members and show them how their involvement can make a real difference in our community and the world.
  5. Participate in initiatives like the Rotary Positive Peace Academy. We create a more inclusive and harmonious club environment by fostering peace and understanding.

Thank you for your service and dedication to our club.

Yours in Rotary,

James Wernicke, Service Chair

Jul 9: The Magic Of Rotary

Greetings Rotarians and Friends,

As we step into a new Rotary year, I am filled with optimism and excitement for the possibilities that lie ahead. This year brings with it fresh perspectives, innovative ideas, and a renewed commitment to service. Our new board brings their unique experiences and insights that will undoubtedly enrich our club. Their enthusiasm and dedication to Rotary should inspire us to strive for greater heights in our service projects and community engagement.

We must also be mindful of our challenges, particularly the issue of declining membership. Recent resignations have shown us areas where we need to improve, such as promoting respect, discouraging gossip, staying apolitical, resolving disagreements, enhancing club communication, and fostering an inclusive and dynamic atmosphere. This offers us an opportunity to reevaluate our approach and think creatively about how we can attract and retain members, foster an inclusive and dynamic environment, and make our club a place where people are eager to join and participate actively.

This year, let’s focus on building strong connections within our community, reaching out to potential members with the message of Rotary’s impact and the personal growth that comes from being a part of this incredible organization. Together, the magic of Rotary can turn our challenges into stepping stones toward a stronger, more vibrant club Thank you for your unwavering dedication and for being a part of this journey. Here’s to a year filled with service, fellowship, and positive change.

Yours in Rotary,

James Wernicke, Service Chair & Newsletter Editor
