This past weekend, I had the fortune to cross paths with the Rotary Club of Juarez Integral after finishing the Chupacabras 100km mountain bike race. It was great to celebrate the accomplishment and talk about the upcoming Bi-District Conference with our friends across the border!

As a reminder, there’s no meeting this week, but we do have some upcoming events on October 25. Purple Pinky events will be at each elementary school’s lunch time. Please contact Alison Pannell if you would like to volunteer. Trick or Treat on Main Street will be the same afternoon 4:00 – 6:00 PM. Contact James Wernicke if you’d like to volunteer for that.

Sarah Piano will speak about Big Brothers Big Sisters at this week’s lunch meeting. Sarah is the Senior Director for the Northern New Mexico region. Big Brothers Big Sisters has a unique one-to-one mentoring experience which helps children achieve success in school, avoid risky behaviors, and improve their self-confidence. The organization started serving northern New Mexico in 1979 and continues to expand its impact. It has won Big Brothers Big Sisters Agency and Board of the Year awards as well as the Pinon Award from Santa Fe Community Foundation for its efforts. You can help by becoming a Big, donating at one of their clothing donation bins, and attending fundraising events. If you can’t attend in person, please consider joining us on Zoom.
Clean Up Los Alamos Day Sep 21
Join us on Saturday, September 21 at 9:00 AM to help clean up the LAHS Memorial Garden. The Memorial Garden honors students we lost during their high school years. It should be a fairly light effort if several people show up.
Homecoming Parade
We are seeking four adults to help walk in the parade. Please contact James Wernicke if you’re interested. The LAHS Interact club will also be participating with us and decorating the float on Wednesday, September 25, @ 4:00. Meet at the Canyon School parking lot at 1:30 PM on Saturday, September 27.
We have a couple events coming up in September. First, Clean Up Los Alamos Day is September 21. We’ll be meeting at LAHS Memorial Garden at 9:00 AM. Please bring your work gloves.
Next, we have the Homecoming Parade on Friday, September 27. We will be working with our Interact club to make a parade float. The theme this year is Carnaval de Rio. We look forward to your participation!

Please join us this Thursday, August 22 6:00 – 7:30 PM at SALA Event Center to watch the documentary “First We Bombed New Mexico”. It is a documentary about the New Mexico Downwinders who were exposed to radiation during the Trinity Site test. It follows their journey to seek justice from the US government for the injuries they suffered and continue to suffer, nearly 80 years later.
If you cannot make it to this showing, there are showings every day 6:00 – 7:30. Proceeds help the New Mexico Downwinders as well as local and women-owned small businesses. Tickets can be purchased here.
Time flies when you’re having fun! It’s hard to believe how quickly this summer is passing. While we’ve been busy enjoying the warm weather and community events, several important dates and opportunities are fast approaching.
First, a quick reminder that August 17th was Los Alamos Non-Profit Day. While the official day has passed, it’s never too late to show your support for your favorite local organizations, including our own Rotary Club!
Second, the SALA Oppenheimer Festival is in full swing! Don’t miss out on the fantastic events and thought-provoking films being showcased, including the award-winning documentary “First We Bombed New Mexico”. This powerful film sheds light on the often-overlooked consequences of nuclear testing on New Mexicans. Stay tuned for an invitation to a special Rotary movie night this week!
Third, the LAHS Memorial Garden needs our attention. Linda Hull has brought to our attention the need for some deferred maintenance in this special space. We’re currently gathering quotes from local landscapers, but we’re looking at a cost of around $1800. We need your help – through financial contributions or creative fundraising ideas – to make these necessary improvements.
Fourth, the summer concerts continue every Friday until August 30th! These concerts are a fantastic opportunity to connect with the community, raise awareness about Rotary, and recruit new members. If you’d like to lend a hand at our concert table, please reach out to me, and I’ll help you get set up.
Fifth, mark your calendars for the Bi-District Conference on November 15-16! For the first time in 15 years, the conference will be held in Juarez, Mexico. While there will be a shuttle from El Paso to the conference venue, if you’re feeling adventurous, join me for an unforgettable culinary experience across the border!
Sixth, we need your help to keep our weekly meetings running smoothly. We’re seeking volunteers to fill various roles, including Finemaster, Sergeant at Arms, Rotary Minute, and A/V support. If you’re able to commit to volunteering at least once a month, or even just occasionally, please contact Linda Bullock.
Finally, the Ropes Course project is still in need of funding to train teachers. If you’d like to contribute to this valuable initiative, please reach out to Alison Pannell.

This year, our nation proudly celebrates a historic milestone. American women athletes brought home a record 67 medals, composing more than half of the total medals won by the United States. The United States and China both claimed 40 gold medals, with American women contributing 26 of those victories. These outstanding achievements highlight the strength, determination, and talent of women athletes who have risen to the challenge and made their mark on the world stage.
This year also marks the first Olympic Games to achieve gender parity, a significant step forward in the pursuit of equality and representation in sports. This achievement resonates deeply with Rotary’s mission, which is dedicated to advancing peace and understanding through service and fostering equality and empowerment in communities worldwide.
Just as the women of the Olympics have broken barriers and reached new heights, we, too, strive to empower individuals and promote positive change. Let us celebrate these inspiring athletes and recommit ourselves to Rotary’s mission of creating a more inclusive and equitable world for all.

We believe the most effective approach for our district is to send donations directly to the Ruidoso Club’s Foundation. This will enable the Ruidoso Rotarians to allocate funds to where and when they are most needed. Your willingness to help and participate fills us with pride. Yesterday, my family and I had the profound experience of visiting the Hiroshima Peace Memorial. Standing in the shadow of history, we were reminded of the devastating impact of the atomic bombing and the resilience of the human spirit in the face of unimaginable adversity. As we walked through the exhibits, we were struck by the stories of those who suffered and survived, and by the ongoing commitment to peace and reconciliation that the memorial embodies.
As members of the Los Alamos Rotary Club, we carry a unique responsibility in the pursuit of peace. August 6 marks the anniversary of the Hiroshima bombing, a moment in history that forever changed our world. It is a poignant reminder of our duty to advocate for understanding and peace-building in all corners of the globe and take meaningful action to foster dialogue, empathy, and cooperation ensuring that the lessons of the past guide us towards a better tomorrow.
